We had about four hours to explore the park and an hour presentation from Chris, a rollercoaster engineer. Chris talked to us about the physics and mechanics of the rollercoasters and rides throughout the park as well as testing our knowledge. He described how rollercoasters like ‘Colossus’ handle the ten loops and corkscrews without grinding to a halt or falling off the track and how it is engineered to ‘trick’ your brain by making you think you are going to crash into a wall, before sweeping you away to safety. He demonstrated the forces that keep you held in your seat on rides like ‘Zodiac’ where no seatbelt is necessary and using a model rollercoaster and simulation, showed us the G-Force that you can experience on rides like ‘SAW’. He also revealed to us how the complex launch system for ‘Stealth’, one of Europe’s fastest rollercoasters, accelerates it from 0-80mph in 1.8 seconds so it can then climb 205ft before plummeting back to the ground. Occasionally there is a ‘roll back’, when it fails to make it over the summit and rolls backwards to the start and Chris showed us how electromagnets help it rapidly stop without causing an accident. Thankfully we were reassured by Chris that the many restrictions put in place on the rides make them more than safe!

After the presentation we were let loose to explore Thorpe Park and its attractions. Some of us were brave enough to go on ‘Tidal Wave’, a giant log flume that left us soaking wet for the rest of the day! As well as all the other thrilling rides we even got to try out this year’s new rollercoaster, ‘The Swarm’, which features inverted drops, corkscrews, loops and many near misses. We have learnt a lot about the Science of the rides and thoroughly enjoyed the trip; we would definitely go back again. Thank you for a great day!

Another member from BP came to talk to them about engineering and the different types such as mechanical, chemical, environmental etc. After exploring the different types of engineering they moved onto the subject of oil rigs and what type of engineering they are, they learnt some very shocking and interesting facts along the way, and eventually got into some practical work which involved them getting their hands sticky by using marshmallows and straws to create the bottom of an oil rig. Whichever group that could hold the most amount of juggling balls won! And with great delight my group won, managing to hold 2 juggling balls! It was a great morning, which I can say without a doubt they all enjoyed and learnt something new!

This was one of the many Olympic events being run by Tina Blower SSCo which is to culminate in an Athletics competition at Tilsley Park in July. The standard of netball was the best I have seen for a long time and matches weer closely contested. This tournament was preceeded with several after-school netball training sessions held for the Primary Schools at Langtree School.

Gold medals awarded to Whitchurch 1st, Silver Woodcote 2nd and Bronze Goring 3rd.
